The Cactus Classic was first run at SRS formerly known as Scale Racing Sports in Tempe. The first ever Cactus Classic was formed by then manager of SRS Mike Dolan (later became owner). The first Cactus Classic was sponsored by Team Losi in1986. This event had around 220 entries. The next year, then owner of Pro-Line Racing Joe Warren was brought in and the race then became the Cactus Classic sponsored by Pro-Line. By now Mike Dolan is the sole owner of SRS and the race becomes a piece of R/C history from this point on and is a recognized race all over the world by 1990. Mike's wife draws the Cactus Logo you still see today on t-shirts and any other advertising for the race. Year after year, the Cactus Classic brings to the world new and exciting racing and was the first event of its caliber to bring you the truck class you still see today as a recognized class all over the country. Till 1989, The Cactus Classic was a ROAR sanctioned event.

2007 Cactus Classic was at the time the most attended Cactus Classic at 378 entries. In 2008 that record was broken with with entries reaching 383. The Cactus Classic has never had as much worldwide influence as the past 2 years brought. Masami Hirosaka made his first Cactus Classic appearance in 2007 and 2007 marked another history mark having nearly 70 entries from drivers not from the USA.
